Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 IF ED

This is a photo I took of my Nikkor 300mm F/4.5 IF ED lens attached to my Rebel XT and mounted to a tripod.

To take the photo, first I set my camera's exposure settings to make my brightly lit living room appear totally black. In this case, I used 1/200 sec, ISO 100 and F/16. At these settings, the room was black.

I then used two flashes to light up the subject. In this case, I used one flash to camera left and one flash to camera right. The left flash was about the height of the subject camera. It had a makeshift snoot made from rubber banding a piece of paper around the flash head and draping a black tee shirt on top of the snoot. The camera right flash was positioned above the subject camera and tilted down toward it. It, too, had a makeshift snoot. It was triggered using an optical slave.

The raw image showed some light had leaked from one of the flashes and reflected off the wall. So, I used the burn tool in Photoshop to turn the entire background black. Afterward, I selected and removed the tripod arm from the photo, because I didn't feel it added anything to the picture. Sharpened and adjusted the contrast. I think it came out pretty good.
